I wrote for today’s edition of The Gazette about junior wide receiver Kevin Fogler, who has been Mr. Reliable for the Falcons while simultaneously becoming their big-play threat.

You’ll probably be surprised (I know I was) to see how many of his 17 catches have gone for first downs or touchdowns.

A couple more interesting things about Fogler:

-He didn’t take one snap with the varsity – even during practices – when he was a freshman. But he’s made big strides – especially, Calhoun said, in the weight room.

-He never played receiver until arriving at the academy. He was a tight end and safety in high school, but he “flexed out” and was in a standing (two-point) stance quite a bit.

“I was kind of told that I’d come in as a receiver because of my size, and then they’d try to move me down to tight end and try to put weight on me,” he said. “But I ended up showing up and staying at receiver.”

Also, The Salt Lake Tribune – and BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall – wonder if the Mountain West Conference has a “Big Four,” with Air Force, and not just a Big Three.

And the Las Vegas Review-Journal takes a look at the Falcons’ defense.

Switching to other Falcon sports, hockey writer Joe Paisley has Three Things to Watch in Air Force hockey’s weekend series at Holy Cross, and Kevin Carmody previews the Air Force women’s basketball season.

Check tomorrow’s edition of The Gazette for my men’s hoops preview.

    Thanks Jake.

Really appreciate the links to the other MWC team newspaper articles.

Bronco Mendenhall deserves a lot of respect. He immediately turned around a program on the verge of total destruction. However, this is our year to beat BYU!

    Go Falcons!
