Air Force did not want to rush its search for a new women’s basketball coach.
And it certainly hasn’t.
Ardie McInelly was fired in late March, and the Falcons still have not replaced her.
According to several sources, the academy targeted Arizona State associate head coach Meg Sanders as a leading candidate. No word on whether the position has been or will be offered to Sanders.
What is going on? This should not take this long. Anybody got info?
Just an opinion: We want to find a qualitifed coach who want to be here AND coach a DI program in the tough MWC women’s league for a school (USAFA) that only has a total enrollment of approximately 950 women. The last part of that statement will make many coaches think before/if offered the position. It will take a ‘special’ person/coach to take on this task! I hope we get a good one. Go Falcons
I agree with the above post, but the trouble is that this is starting to look like they fired the coach and then started the search–knowing how challenging the job is, wouldn’t it have been smarter to have the replacement at least in the pipeline? Again, the Academy athletic administration looks unprofessional and sloppy in its hiring and firing decisions.
ChicagoZoomie,
Absolutely!! You NEVER fire a coach, especially one with contract time remaining (unless it’s for “cause” ) without having already identified a replacement. In this case the coachhad two years remaining.
This very uncharacteristic firing followed on by a search from scratch leads me to believe there is more to the firing than we know and quite possibly a very calculated coverup of a deeper problem within the program.
TheBird….respectfully, look at the program, it was time. No need to ‘make a mountain out of a molehill’. There does not always need to be a smoking gun other than the record itself.
rjp,
Using your logic then it was LONG overdue to “can” the baseball coach as well, and the men’s basketball coach is next………….he’s no better equipped to succeed. “Look at the program”. The men’s basketball program was at one time a “molehill” but has grown into a “mountain”. Only problem is the men’s basketball “mountain” has 4 years left on it’s contract!!!! Who signed him into such a lengthy deal hmm?!?!
If it “was time” for women’s basketball, then why was the baseball clown allowed to saunter into the athletic department as a PE coach for the next two years after seven years of failure when the women’s basketball coach was told to hit the road ?!?!?! Hmm???? At least she was a female. AFA has plenty of “plain white guys” running the show! Why retain a lunatic who knows NOTHING about baseball?!?!
This athletic department is famous for coverups of their faux-pas!! Why should this situation be any different?
” Who signed him into such a lengthy deal hmm?!?!”
It’s even worse than that, The Bird. You should have said “Who EXTENDED him into a LONGER deal?!?!?!”
Sounds like Meg Sanders would be a great choice. Are we trying to get her?
Rott,
hopefully Meg is the answer, a friend in the basketball world said they are still interviewing because of some pressure from outside of athletics. She was told that there was going to be an offer made, but that the search team was told to keep looking.
Gamer…..I love the bio on Coach Sanders….hope we get her!

Sounds like kind of a mess.
Jake, Any movement, this is amazing.
Please allow me to substitute some other words for “amazing”: “deplorable”; “disastrous”; “incompetent”; “inexplicable”; “disheartening”; “stupid”; and “routine”.
I’m hearing there are more interviews this week. Sanders still on the radar.
