The Mountain West Conference has announced that Boise State has accepted an invitation to join the league, effective July 1, 2011.
“We are pleased and excited to welcome Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference,” league commissioner Craig Thompson said in a statement. “Since our inception just 11 short years ago, the Mountain West has experienced tremendous success, and the addition of Boise State will further enhance that strength. The MWC continues to strategize regarding potential membership scenarios, and bringing Boise State into the conference is an important part of that evolution.”
“The invitation to join the Mountain West Conference reflects the excellence that Boise State University has demonstrated academically and athletically,” Boise State president Robert Kustra said in a statement. “It will be a privilege to compete and partner with such a successful group of member institutions. This move is in the best interests of Boise State’s future, and the university is excited to be part of one of the nation’s most outstanding conferences.”
The Mountain West Conference was founded with eight members in 1998. Boise State is the second institution to join the league since then. TCU joined in 2005.
Thompson will hold a teleconference at about noon. I’ll have more on the blog after that.
While I think Boise St. is a good fit in the Mountain West, I don’t like the possible scheduling implications. If the MWC continues full round-robin scheduling, the only optional game on AF’s schedule will be Troy’s opening patsy. Makes for a boring schedule.
Hopefully, the MWC will pick up the leftovers from the Big 12 as well and go to 2 divisions. Then we could still have an interesting out of conference, out of military game every year.
when we were in the wac and it was at 10 teams, (air force, byu, csu, fresno, hawaii, unm, sdsu, utah, utep, wyoming) we only played a 8 game conference schedule and you would rotate a break with every team. I would think with 7 of the 10 same players involved they would consider this option again. I think this improves the schedule as we would now play four bcs legit teams a year, they have more credibility than minnesota, houston, and notre dame (since Davies left) good news is that we have a chance to see all of them live and in person. outside of notre dame trade offs, it is rare to get any good games at home, with out raising ticket prices which are the lowest in all of the major conference schools.
Look for the Big-12 refugees to be added to the MWC mix.
