Schedule update: Air Force and Iowa State cancel future series, Notre Dame announcement close

Air Force and Iowa State had a football series scheduled for 2013 and 2014, but that has been canceled according to Air Force senior associate athletics director Jim Trego. Changes in the Big 12 prompted the Cyclones to ask to call off the series.

Air Force, and all Mountain West teams, have some scheduling dilemmas. The Mountain West appears headed to a nine-game conference schedule, which will force some changes. Those changes could be a few years off as Mountain West teams play out some of the scheduled non-conference series instead of trying to get out of contracts. The changes would affect Air Force, which would have just one open non-conference date every year, considering its annual rivalry against Navy and Army.

The Falcons are set with a home-and-home series against Notre Dame, and that could be announced by Notre Dame as soon as today. Here’s a look at what non-conference games are on the schedule now for the next five years, keeping in mind that all of it is very tentative, especially the further out it is projected:

2011
Sept. 3 – South Dakota
Oct. 1 – at Navy
Oct. 8 – at Notre Dame
Nov. 5 – Army

2012
Sept. 1 – Idaho State
Oct. 6 – Navy
Nov. 3 – at Army

2013
Aug. 31 – Colgate
Oct. 5 – at Navy
Nov. 2 – Army
Oct. 26/Nov. 16 – Notre Dame

2014
Aug. 30 – (open, likely vs. FCS opponent)
Oct. 4 – Navy
Nov. 1 – at Army

2015
Sept. 5 – Oklahoma State
Sept. 12 – at Cincinnati
Oct. 3 – at Navy
Nov. 7 – Army
