Final: Air Force 77, Utah 69; Washington comes up big

Guard Evan Washington scored two points on 1-of-5 shooting on Wednesday night, and his approach certainly wasn’t what mom and dad taught him way back when.

“I can remember when I first started playing, my parents would tell me to shoot it and be aggressive,” Washington said. “Naturally, me, I’m trying to put guys in position to score. I enjoy helping other people score.

Washington distrubuted the ball against Utah like no other Air Force player has for almost seven years. His 11 assists are the most for a Falcons player since A.J. Kuhle had 11 against San Diego State on March 1, 2004. On Air Force’s most important plays down the stretch of its 77-69 win, almost all of them came off a Washington assist. Washington also had eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

“If we gave game balls, we’d give it to Evan,” coach Jeff Reynolds said.

Washington hasn’t always had the luxury of being a distributor, but Air Force has a better team around him. Four players finished in double digits against Utah, and none of them were Washington. Of course, those players might not have gotten into double digits without Washington setting them up.

“Evan’s got great court awareness, it’s unbelievable,” forward Tom Fow said. “He was on fire tonight.”

Huge win. What a way to start the conference schedule. Dare we hope for more conference wins, and maybe even a run into the tournament? Too early to tell, but I hope the players and staff are taking a little time to savor this one and use it as a springboard to bigger and better wins.

Good to see this team get a conference win early, especially after the Colorado College debacle early in the year. I’m not ready to predict post-season success just yet, but 4-5 conf wins would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

I’m not expecting wins in any of their next 3 games, but if they can at least remain competitive and not get blown out, I think 4-5 conf wins remains a reasonable goal. Would love to see them prove me wrong and do even better!
