Really looking forward to today’s game at the Marriott Center, for a chance to see player of the year candidate Jimmer Fredette up close (sportswriters complain a lot, but one of the perks of the job I’ll always enjoy is sitting courtside to watch high-level basketball) and it will be a sellout crowd, so it should be a great atmosphere here. And it’s a measure of how far Air Force has really come along this season.
One lingering question I had from Wednesday’s game against Utah was why Zach Bohannon played just two minutes. He had played 44 minutes in his first three games, and was a productive backup for center Taylor Broekhuis.
Coach Jeff Reynolds explained that he wanted to use smaller lineups and hopefully get Utah to take some of its biggest players off the floor – which is to Air Force’s advantage considering its height disadvantage. Reynolds said that worked pretty well, but it meant almost no playing time for Bohannon.
“That gameplanning limited Zach,” Reynolds said. “It wasn’t anything he did wrong.”
Reynolds said he actually hopes to get Bohannon about 17-18 minutes per game going forward. Bohannon missed most of the nonconference games with a thumb injury but has come back strong.
“He’s making strides,” Reynolds said. “He’s come a long way.”
I hate to call out JR, but I think Zach felt the old JR wrath where he’d pull a guy if he d/n like a shot he took. Zach missed his first shot in two games early during his time in the game and he came out pretty much right after. JR had gotten away from that and I think that’s why the offense is opening up.
If Reynolds is serious about competing in the MWC he needs to start figuring out how to get Zach some time at the 4 spot. We need to have he and Taylor as two bigs on the court at the same time. Zach can shoot the 3 from the top of the key like Nick Welch used to…and he plays tough (he’s from Big 10 and The Valley country) and we need some toughness inside. Taylor’s a quick big that can shoot; I think they’d be a good combo
