Air Force receiver Jonathan Warzeka is one of 50 players on the watch list for the Hornung Award, given to a versatile player who excels at multiple positions. Warzeka certainly fits that criteria. He is the Mountain West’s preseason special teams player of the year, for his work as a kickoff returner. He plays receiver, but in Air Force’s offense his position does way more than just catch the ball. He had 41 rushing attempts last year from his position in the slot. He’ll get plenty of chances to make plays in a variety of ways for the Falcons this season.
Chad Hall had 230 rushing attempts and 50 receptions. Will Warzeka get anywhere near that many touches?
Will Calhoun may spread it around so much that nobody has an exceptional statistical year?
No, I don’t think Warzeka gets anywhere close to that number of touches, for a few reasons. One, Chad Hall might be the best offensive player to ever suit up for Air Force (at least for one season, and if he’s not topping the list, he’s in a pretty small group). That was a special circumstance. Also, the team is better, especially when it comes to depth. I don’t think you can give anyone that many touches when you have Tim Jefferson, Asher Clark and Zack Kauth, among others. I do think it’s in Air Force’s best interests to get Warzeka more touches this season. He’s a fantastic weapon.
