The grind of camp is here, with the players about halfway through their five weeks of practice before the season opener. As such, the start of practice was a little choppy, but the team got some decent work done inside the Holaday Athletic Center. Here’s a few notes:
- First, a quick update on linebacker Ken Lamendola. He hurt his ankle the first week in camp, and it’s still going to be a while before he can return, although it appears Lamendola will return this season. But the Falcons will be careful with him.
“It’s just having him mend, and there has to be some confidence to be developed that you can deliver and explode on any kind of physical contact,” Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said.
- The latest movement on the depth chart today was by outside linebacker Jamil Cooks. The talented sophomore got his most extensive work with the first-team defense that I can remember in camp. Alex Means has been at the starting outside linebacker position opposite Patrick Hennessey most of camp, and Stephan Atrice had a few practices there, too. Cooks has a great deal of upside, but I think any of the three could end up as the starter in the opener.
- Air Force is going to have its annual Kids’ Day event at Falcon Stadium on Saturday. There’s a scrimmage from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with autographs afterward. The free event is a good chance for fans to get a look at the team before the season starts.
