Not having senior quarterback Tim Jefferson for all but one drive on Saturday hurt Air Force in its 25-17 loss to Wyoming on Saturday, and there’s no guarantee Jefferson will return next week.
Next week is the final home game of the season and the final home game for the senior class, which includes the all-time leader in wins for a quarterback in Air Force history.
Jefferson was diagnosed with a concussion on the sideline after Air Force’s first drive, which ended when he was stopped on fourth and goal at the 1-yard line.
“We’ll see,” Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said about Jefferson’s availability next week. “That’s one of those where each concussion, with symptoms that are involved in any way, that’s a decision in regards to the health of the young man.”
Air Force’s offense changed dramatically with Jefferson on the bench. Air Force passed the ball one time in the first 58:39 of the game. Backup Connor Dietz is a dynamic runner, but Jefferson is the far superior passer of the two.
Dietz could be the starter next week, with Air Force needing to win its final two games to become bowl eligible.
“If it is me, I’m going to do my best to make sure something like today never happens again,” Dietz said.
Tough stretch for TJ. Injured during the New Mexico game; missed most of the Wyo game. I have a feeling he played versus Army only because it was a CIC Trophy game. Would be a shame if he misses Senior Day.
Yesterday’s game gave me a glimpse into AFA’s 2012 season. Calhoun doesn’t trust Dietz to throw the ball. With that in mind–and if TJ can’t play versus UNLV and/or CSU–it might be time to give Tucker Tipton some reps in practice as he, rather than Dietz, may be the QB for AFA next year. Mike DeWitt may run better than Wes Cobb, but Cobb doesn’t fumble. Going forward I prefer to see Cobb as the primary FB.
I have to agree on the quarterback call. And the Falcons have to fix their defensive schemes.

Speaking of a bowl game. It appears that Air Force is out. We will probably finish at #5 with a win out. Still not sure if we can win out. Any thoughts on other potential bowl games.
Hey Dietz! It’s a bit late now to be saying you’ll make sure something like that never happens again.
By the way, did anyone else but me notice that WYO’s QB had as much time as he wanted to find an open receiver? As much time as our D-Line was giving him, NFL wideouts couldn’t have covered the receivers for that long. Bowl game?!!! Bowl game?!!! Are you kidding me?
Chris,
I agree with your 1st comment on this post. But I wonder if next season’s starter is even on the current roster.
Eric, I join you in wondering if next year’s starting QB is on the current roster. TJ graduates. Dietz returns for what amounts to a “red shirt” semester. In the two games in which he has played [New Mexico and Wyo] Dietz, in essence, did not throw the ball. I don’t think at this late point in his college career he will develop into a serviceable throwing QB. The team needs him to be able to pass with some proficiency and I am skeptical he can do so.
I have no idea what Tucker Tipton can and cannot do in the AFA offense. He is the third of three QBs on the current roster. Your question is well posed in that it may be quite likely the 2012 starting QB for the Falcons is not on the roster.
Just for the record I am not the ‘Chris’ who made short consecutive posts in this thread. I just happen to have the same first name as that poster.
AFA cannot better #5 in MWC. BCS conference? This AFA edition would have been killed! What happened to this very over rated team?
AFA has beat no one! Army has 7 losses, Navy has 6, and winless NM and then the two FCS teams. The next two have losing records as well. Pray San Jose State or Army beats Navy so Navy will be bowless with 7 losses. Better for AFA recruiting.
A 7-5 AFA team, maybe, has no stars and no good victories. Thank God for the fans who travel/pay for many Bowl tickets!
Strangly, San Francisco’s Kraft Hunger -AFA ‘s 2002 loss to Va.Tech( Fisher Deberry’s last bowl game) -would be a better site at a better time slot than New Mexico’s bowl as would the lowly Washington,DC Bowl called what? This East coast bowl game would be better for TV and eastern USA exposure, and maybe give east coasters a taste of AFA/Big East football. Cheers. Beat UNLV, not a given.
BTW, #11 is not ready for prime time and will never be against a good team. AFA needs a better QB next year, or maybe even this year with TJ maybe out.
Try the third QB and see what he can do in the second quarter, not the 4th. #11 has had his chances and he is playing the best he can. His fumbles and pitches badly.
FB CANNOT fumble. FB CANNOT fumble. That said, more Cobb, more Cobb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
