Air Force faces tough road test to start MW play

Air Force knows playing on the road in college basketball is tough, and Saturday will be a unique situation.

Boise State is new to the league, and Air Force has never played at their gym. The Falcons will be the Broncos’ first Mountain West opponent, which means there won’t be any familiarity with Taco Bell Arena, the Broncos’ home. And, Boise State is a perfect 9-0 at home this year.

Complicating matters is that Air Force couldn’t use the arena tonight to practice. The Falcons wanted to, but were denied because there is a gymnastics event there tonight, Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds said. With a 4 p.m. tipoff time, there will just be a short shootaround for the Falcons at the unfamiliar venue.

“You don’t have much time to get in on the day of the game and get some acclimation to the arena,” Reynolds said.

Players like to have at least a little bit of practice time to get comfortable with the backdrop, which can help their shooting.

“It’s like anything else, no matter what sport you play or what you’re doing professionally, you like to find a routine and rhythm to get into,” Reynolds said. “Most college players, on gameday, at some point like to get into the building and get some shots up, get some familiarity with what it looks like.”

Parsdon me but it seems like someone of the AFA athletic/basketball staff would have checked on availability of the Boise State Arena long before our team arrived. Come on folks, we are a Division 1 institution with plenty of athletic department staff. In three words, “DO YOUR JOB” Unexecuable and someone needs to be held accountable! Our players deserve better!

Wait, so we really think Boise State would have canceled an event at their arena just because Air Force called them and asked?

  • FalconFan5 says:

That “ain’t” the point Frank. Your article sounds like AF did not know this until they arrived in Boise. I was just making the point that someone should have known this well in advance, not so late that it became a news item on the day of the game.

Division 1 athletic offices identify, work, and solve the problems for the team. In this case, I don’t believe they did!

I suspect that every other MWC Athletic Office has an item on their travelling checklist to ensure availablility of Clune Arena for a team practice/shootaround.
