Air Force coach Troy Calhoun confirmed Tuesday night’s news that defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt has accepted a job as Texas A&M’s linebackers coach.
Wallerstedt had run the Air Force defense the last two years, and had been under some criticism from fans for the way the defense played in 2011, when it was 65th in yards allowed and 72nd in points allowed nationally. However, the defense went through many injuries during the season, including a stretch when all three starting defensive linemen were out.
If the Falcons decide to promote from within the staff, an obvious candidate would be secondary coach Charlton Warren, who has carried the titles of assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator. Warren, an Air Force graduate, has been on the staff for seven seasons.
Seems a logical choice given our limited recruiting capacity and $$ in the pie…he deserves a shot at the DC role!
I wonder if Wallerstadt wasn’t given a nudge by Calhoun. I hope so, if for no other reason it shows he doesn’t have the blind loyalty DeBerry did.
Whoever the new DC is, I doubt the Defense gets much worse…but it will be tough to do much better with all the graduation losses. Next year could be pretty rough.
