Generally, I wouldn’t take much stock into anyone trying to predict every single bowl matchup in the middle of summer. But since it’s Phil Steele, who puts out the best college football preview publication around, it’s worth a look.
Even in what should be a bit of a rebuilding year for the Falcons, Steele has Air Force in a bowl game, which would make it six bowls in a row for AFA. Steele has Air Force playing in the New Mexico Bowl against Washington, which would be a pretty interesting matchup. Among other Mountain West teams, Steele had bowl trips projected for Boise State (Las Vegas), Nevada (Poinsettia), Fresno State (Independence) and San Diego State (Hawaii).
Although any projections this early are for entertainment at best, obviously, I could see the New Mexico Bowl being Air Force’s destination. Even though the Falcons are replacing 16 starters, the schedule sets up fairly well for them to be bowl eligible. If they’re eligible, I wouldn’t figure them to be high enough in the standings to draw a Las Vegas or Poinsettia Bowl slot, and they’ve been to the Independence Bowl recently, so New Mexico – which has coveted Air Force in recent years but hasn’t hosted the Falcons – makes logical sense.
Either way, it’s something fun to think about in early July.
